While LASIK is often talked about in the news and on TV, it is not always a good fit for everyone. It’s important when talking with your ophthalmologist that you understand if you are a good fit for this procedure. Don’t worry if LASIK is not right for you as there are several other procedures that can give you many of the same benefits of LASIK. Below are a few alternatives if you’re not deemed to be a good candidate for LASIK surgery and what to look for in a qualified LASIK surgeon.
ASA or advanced surface ablation is sometimes also referred to as LASEK. While this procedure has many names, it’s typically recommended when a patient is not a good candidate for LASIK. ASA is a type of refractive eye surgery to help correct short-sightedness (also known as myopia), long-sightedness (also known as hyperopia) and astigmatism. ASA was actually the predecessor to LASIK surgery.
The implantable contact lens is an intraocular lens, or a lens that is put inside the eye. It is different than the Intraocular Lens Implants that are used for cataract surgery. The natural lens of the eye is not removed when an ICL is implanted. Candidates for the ICL are those with moderate to severe nearsightedness that are out of the range for LASIK and ASA.
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is another option for those who may not qualify for traditional LASIK surgery. RLE replaces your eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens to help you reduce your need for bifocals or reading glasses and to help you achieve sharper focus. RLE is typically used for individuals with extreme farsightedness where LASIK is not a good option.
