April is Women’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness month. Just take a look at any neighborhood playground and you can typically see a difference between how a father values safety versus a mother. Not to stereotype, but often you find dads encouraging kids to jump from great heights while moms are chasing behind young ones ensuring they don’t slip on any hard surfaces.
Why bring this up? Other than to say thanks for women because without them, most of us would not have survived to see adulthood, but also to question who is looking out for their safety and wellbeing?
As we finish up celebrating Women’s History Month, let’s continue to focus on the health of the women in our lives by making sure their wellbeing and safety are a priority this April. The organization Prevent Blindness has even declared April to be Women’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month.
You may be surprised to learn that not all eye afflictions affect men and women the same. It is interesting how both biology and cultural norms create different experiences for our vision and eyesight.
Unfortunately, women actually have higher rates of eye disease. This can include cataracts, glaucoma, and other age-related macular degeneration as women get older. It is also often the case that women even experience dry eye more frequently than men.
There are lots of ways that you can celebrate this focus on women’s eye health and safety when it comes to the women you care about most, such as buying them a gift like sunglasses or other eyewear accessory. Women are notorious for selflessly getting by with what they have, rather than taking the time to focus on what they actually need.
Purchasing eyewear specific to an activity that a woman in your life enjoys is a great way to let her know that you care about her. Reading glasses for the readers or prescription goggles for the athlete are two examples.
Perhaps the best way to let the women in your life know you care about them is by encouraging them to have their eyes and vision regularly checked by an eye doctor.
